"According to ancient legend, there was a time when dying meant that you were
forever banished from the mortal plains of Kesmai. Many valiant warriers
and skilled magicians were forever lost when they met a tragic end due to Age
(or a dragon's gullet). The Ghods took this matter very seriously, for if
too many valiant heros were lost, the land of Kesmai might forever fall into
the Hands of Evil. So the Ghods caused to be formed the lands of Praetoseba,
or the Underworld as it is referred to in the land of Mortals.
In the Underworld, Souls of those whose valor led them to an untimely demise
would be sent to perform certain quests. each quest would restore a part of
the body, until the hero was again made whole, when he would be allowed to
return to the land of the living. The Ghods would restore the Vigor, Vitality,
and Youth of the Mortal, along with such skill as had been attained during
the lifetime of the individual.
Finally, as a caution against improper behavior, Set, the forgiver will need
to forgive any and all transgressions that the mortal may have commited
during his life."

This versions of the underworld maps was compiled in Version .60 of
Legends of Kesmai. While all attempts have been made to make sure that
the map is presented as accurately as possible, the maps are provided AS IS,
and the user is totally responsible for the use of the maps and any
misadventure that results from thier use.
Many thanks to the Great Fizzy (Fizzbozz, CIS 70303,576) for the original
of this document that was used and updated.
Also with this set of maps is an index (of sorts) for each of the quest NPC's
or items that are of importance, and where they are located. And at the end
an updated excerpt from the original Kompanion showing the quests and thier
elements.
If you find any corrections that need to be made, please pass them along to me
so that I may add them to any future updates to the maps.

The temple of Osiris is where the Stomach quest begins (and ususally ends),
and most of the other quests will pass through the Temple (if for no other
reason than it is quicker to die than to walk back). In the center of the
Temple is a Balm fountain, which if you jump in with some open bottles, you
can obtain a couple of bottle of balm (which can come in handy on the longer
walks).
The Temple of Ra, above the main temple, is where Ra resides, and where many
questees will need to go in order to complete the Liver Quest. Usually, A
Lawful Cobra resides there as well, and will work almost as well as any other
to complete the dreaded Cobra Quest. In the ancient days, this particular
cobra was shunned in favor of others, because it was a slower beast, but now
I believe all cobras are about the same in speed (at least the others aren't
any faster) so go ahead and use this one to complete the quest, if you must.

The Far Western section of the Main Plains of the UW is dominated by the
Temple and the Orchard (which is in desparate need of tending). The ending
of 3 of the quests are in this area.
Also, hidden behind a pair of secret doors, the Rat king makes his abode.
While many consider him a waste of time (and if you are well versed in the
ways of the UW, I would tend to agree), still his treasure horde contains a
few bottles (filled with poison, but easily replaced with balm by opening the
bottles and jumping in the Fountain in the Temple), 2 or 3 Light wands (useful
for traversing some of the Darker regions), and a +3 Shield Ring (which will
block many of the attacks from the denizens of the region).
Generally, a lawful cobra can be found on the north side of the Temple (if it
hasn't wandered TOO far). However, if the door to his abode has been opened,
this cobra will wander far and wide, and can be found just about anywhere.

The great pyramid of the Rulers and the Pyramid of the Sphinx are just to
the east of the City, on the north side of the river, making a great mark
on the sky. on the small island that connects the 2 pyramids resides a
great sandwyrm. Killing this sandwyrm will obtain the special Gem required
for entry into the Pyramid itself.
To the south of the river can be found the entrance into Sekhmet's temple,
then the great swamp to the east of that. Many crocodiles live in that
swamp, including one or 2 lawful crocodiles required for one of the
Intestine Quest. Also the 2 river nymphs live near the swamp, one just
to the North of Sekhmets Temple, the other in the Far East of the swamp.
The River continues to flow to the East until it reaches the eastern end of
the plains, where it plummets over the cliffs to the cataracts below.

The very far east of the Plains is the Cliff that lead to the Cataracts
below. The river makes a great Waterfall here, and the current is sometimes
so harsh as to pull the unwary adventurer over the edge to an instant death.
Following the Golden path to the NE, a hero who has completed all of their
quests may finally find the portal that leads back to the land of the living.
Crossing the rickety bridge towards the SE will lead to the Tiger Woods, where
the lawful tigers reside. be very carful in this area for there are 2 dangers.
One is the Poacher, and archer of great renown that likes to hunt in the

A - Throw you over the Falls

The Tomb of the Rulers is a maze of sorts, and depending on where you want to
go, the way is short or long.
The way to Montu is the easiest. Enter the tomb, wear the Featherfall
boots (that you should have received from Cleopatra), and when you reach the
fork in the passage, take the southern route and jump down the hole. Then
make your way through the Maze until you meed Montu Face to Face.
Pekhet, on the other hand, requires the adventurer to climb several sets of
stairs to reach a 2nd Hole (be very careful to avoid the telport traps along
the way). Jumping down this hole will put the adventurer directly in front
of Pekhet.
There are several "Exits" from the tomb, but probably the easiest, once you
have completed your quest there, is to find one of the fires and dive into it
for the quick ride back to Osiris.

Underneath the plains is a vast cavern system. Of course, since it IS under
the plains, it is very dark in most of the areas. Unless you feel very
comfortable walking in the dark, it would be wise to bring one (or 2) light
wands with you to illuminate your path. One of the Paths will be required
should you be unfortunate to obtain the Cobra Quest, and the passage
to Re.Hatakthi is Dark.
And while the passage to Khnumeri is lighted (a sign of a more civilized
Ghodess) the cave the makes up her front porch is dark.
If, after you have finished with Montu, you should happen to misstep and
trigger the teleport, you can find yourself in the underground area known
as Montu's lake, a lake shrouded in Darkness, where even the light of a light
wand will not penetrate.

A - Re.Hatakhti

The River from above falls and creates a wild display at the bottom of the
cliffs. While much of the area is in some form of light, there are areas
of darkness, particularly to the North towards one of the entrances to the
temple of Set, and some of the area around the Entrance to Ptah's residence
are also shrouded in Darkness.
The River itself continues until it passes in to a region of COMPLETE
darkness and flows into the Sea of Darkness.

A --Khnumeri (Lung Quest)
B --Ptah

The Ghods created an area of SPECIAL punishment for those heros who did
not act according to the hero's code during their life. The karma quest
starts in a very deep place, where Fire and Ice rule. In this cave reside a
lawful Dragon and a Lawful Demon (beware, for they are just as nasty as
their evil counterparts). For those who are fortunate enough to survive
long enough to climb out of the cave, There is an 8000' climb to reach the
top of the Dragon's Flume (completely in the dark), which will put the
person on the East side of Sea of Darkness. By careful swimming, the person
may navigate the sea to reach another climb up to the Sinner's maze (usually
inhabited by a demon, and completely dark in any case), and finally after
navigating the Maze, our misguided hero may reach a climb down to the back
entrance to the Temple of Set (also completely Dark).
Of course, for Heros that are not completely and hopelessly misguided, they
may make their way one time to the Temple of Set from the entrance below the
waterfall. After reaching Set once (or dying in the attempt) all will have
to traverse the Full path of pennance until their Karma burden has been
removed, when they can then just step in a fire in the Cave and return to
Osiris.
A word of caution, most of the climbs are one-way (ie, there's no turning
back). and the jumps are just enough to kill you if you should misstep.

A - Top of Climb from Dragon's Flume
x1 - "Teleport" to x2
x3 - "Teleport" to x4
cu - Climb to Sinner's Maze

The Temple of Set is the final stopping point for those wishing to remove
the Karmic Burden. But Set does not take interruptions lightly, so the
hero must brave a very difficult obstacle course in order to meet with Set.
Coming from either side, there 3 3 SD's to pass (not including the Entry
SD to the Far West of the temple). In front of each door is a chaotic demon
of great power.
While I was mapping (and I did this as a non-burdened Lawful) I went past all
6 demons at some point, and was bombarded with Blindness, Stun, Fear, Curse,
Death, Web, and the Ghods only know what else. Of course, I only tackled
1 demon at a time, and I survived only because I was fully loaded with 8
Shield rings (ie, they couldn't touch me). but at one point I was down to
1 (that's right, 1) HP, and NO Stamina (so I couldn't run away).
Once the hero survives to reach Set, he will ask Set to forgive them. Set
will remove one Karma point, and then teleport the person to the bottom
level (the cave of the Dragon), and the process must begin again, until ALL
of the Karma is removed.

pb - Bottom of Climb from Sinners Maze (One-Way, no way up)
A - Set
de - Chaotic demons
Beware of the demons that surround the Temple. They are powerful ,and
can cast Blindness, Stun, Fear, Curse, Death, Web, Lightning, and other
such nasty spells to try and stop the questor from reaching Set.

INDEX to Quest NPC's, creatures of the UW, and important Items
I will list here, in alphabetical order, the NPCs and Important chars (Cobras,
etc) that are involved with each quest. All I will list here are the people,
where they can be found, and which quest they are involved with.
Anubus - Initiator of the Intestine Quest. Located in the Western building,
North of the river, in the City of the Ghods.
Cleopatra - "The most Beautiful woman", 2nd part of the Lung Quest. She is in
the southern room in the Eastern building North of the river, in the City
  of the Ghods.
Cobra - There are 3 lawful cobras that I am aware of, and there may or may
not be others. The Cobra is a part of the Liver Quest. The first Cobra
is located in Ra's section of the Main Temple. The 2nd can usually be
located in the vicinity of Nepherteri. The 3rd is Generally underneath
the Temple on the north side. Of course, the Cobras like to wander, so
a little effort may be required to find the cobras.
Crocodile - in the Crocodile swamps are many chaotic crocodiles, and 1 or
2 lawful crocodiles. The lawful crocodiles are a part of the intestine
quest. One is usually found in south edge of the swamp, directly south
of the climb down to the Sandy Caves. Another can generally be found in
the far eastern part of the swamp, close to the cliff area.
Demon - There are many demons in the underworld. Most are in the areas
that lead up to the temple of Set, but there is one rather viscious one
that is along the final part of the Lung Quest, and guards the way to
Khepri. They can cast a variety of spells (just look at the standard
Thaum spells, I have been hit by every nasty one you can imagine), and
are loaded with tons of HP. If you see one, be thinking fast, because
it is better (and easier) to outsmart one than it is to beat one.
Dragon - There are 2 Dragons in the UW. The Evil Dragon is located in the
Far Southeast corner of the tiger woods, and will generally not bother any
one that she can't see (but will give you an instant trip back to Osiris
if she does see you.) The other Dragon is at the bottom of the Pit which
is the beginning of the Karma Quests. This dragon is Lawful, and will
will attack neutrals and Evils. In either case, you're best bet is to
avoid the dragons altogether, and just run like mad if you DO see them.
Horus - 2nd Part of the tiger quest for the stomach. located in the southwest
section of the Main temple level.
Imhotep - Granter of the stomach. Imhotep is located in the NorthEast section
of the Main Temple level, and is the NPC that grants the stomach once the
  quest has been completed.
Isis - 3rd part of the Tiger quest for the stomach. Located in the NorthWest
section of the Main temple level.
Khenty - The locksmith. 2nd part of the locksmith quest for the stomach.
Located in the Western building South of the river in the City of the Ghods.
Khepri - End of the Lung Quest. Located in the FAR Northwest section, at the
  Headwaters of the Sacred River.
Khnumeri - Initiator of the Lung Quest. Khnumeri is located in a temple
  North of the Waterfall.
Magician - see Thutmose.
Montu - 3rd part of the Lung Quest. Montu is located in the Southern half of
  the maze in the Pyramid.
Nefertem - Brother of Sekhmet. 2nd part of the Liver Quest, located south
of the Bridge in the City of the Ghods.
Nehebku - Granter of Intestines. Located in the SouthWest section of the Main
  Temple level.
Neith - 2nd (or 3rd part) of the Bow quest for Intestines. Located to the
  east of the pyramid.
Nepherteri - 3rd part of Ankh Stomach Quest. Nepherteri is located in a cave
located to the north of the city of the Ghods.
Nymph - there are 2 Nymphs. Both are part of the Intestine Quest. The
western Nymph is located North of the entrance to Sekhmet's abode. The
eastern Nymph is located deep in the eastern part of the swamp.
Osiris - Initiater of the Stomach Quest, located at the Western end of the Main
  Temple level.
Pekhet - One of the endings to the Lung Quest. Pekhet is located in the North
half of the Maze in the Pyramid.
Poacher - this NPC has various names, and roams quite far, but is generally
found in the area of the Tiger Woods, usually close to the Dragon. He
carries the bow that you need to take to Neith.
Ptah - 3rd part of Liver Quest. Ptah lives to the far East of the woods that
  are south of the waterfall.
Ra - 2nd part of the Liver Quest. Located above the main temple level.
Rat King - A wimp as far as creatures are concerned, although he can knock you
down (we are talking Serious Rat here). Not really involved with the quest
but can provide some items that are useful in surviving in the UW.
Re.Hatakhti - The end of the Cobra quest for the Liver. Re.Hatakhti is
located in a wooded glen to the north of the Dark, Sandy caves.
Sandwyrm - Generally a nuiscance, but some carry the special Gem that is
required to activate the teleport that will allow a hero to gain access
  to the Pyramid.
Seker - At the south end of the Entry to the UW, he resides
North of the Locking gate, as an extra precaution to keep the demons and
other evil spirits from departing the UW.
Sekhmet - Initiator of the Liver Quest. He is located in the Far east of the
city
of the city of the Ghods (with the entrance to his abode even farther east).
Set - The Karma Forgiver. He is located in the Far East of the section just
  North of the Waterfalls.
Sobek - 2nd part of Crocodile quest for Intestines. He is located in the
River just south of the Pyramid.
Thutmose - refered to only as the Magician in the quests. Located near the
Headwaters, along the way from the Temple to Khepri.
Thoth - End of the Liver Quest. Located beneath the Temple along the West Side

Tiger - THe lawful tiger that needs to be led to Horus is located in the
Tiger woods on the VERY far east end, across the gorge.
Tiy - Queen Tiy, 2nd part of the Ankh Stomach quest. located in the northern
room of the East building (North of the river) in the city of the Ghods.

The Quests of the Underworld
There are four quests which have to be completed, assuming you have no
karma points, before you can leave the Underworld. If you have one or
more karma points you need to get forgiven first. The karma quest is
covered at the end of this guide. After the final quest is completed you
go to the exit portal which is located at the extreme northeast end of the
UW. Use the standard portal chant to return to the land of the living.
To deal with anyone in the Underworld you need to type in 'xxx, teach me',
where 'xxx' is the name of the NPC you are dealing with. This also applies
to Set, the karma point forgiver, who will be covered in detail later. One
of four things can happen from there.
(NPC = non-player character, or computer operated)
1. The NPC will tell you to go see someone else (another NPC)
2. The NPC will drop something and tell you to take it to someone else.
3. The NPC will tell you to lead an animal to someone else.
4. The NPC will tell you he/she can't help you, or you should see someone
else first, in which case you are talking to the wrong one.

To deal with animals like the tiger, cobra or crocodile, you approach the
animal and say 'xxx, follow me', where 'xxx' is the animal in question. One
thing to note with the (lawful) crocodile is there are usually chaotic
crocodiles in the area too, so make sure you talk to the right one. To get
the critter to go up or down stairs or pits, say 'xxx, climb up (or down)'.
To deal with chaotic or evil critters, the best thing is to walk away.
Almost all the critters in the UW are slow moving and slow reacting, with
the exception of the Ice Dragon, who can hit you with an icestorm as soon
as it sees you. The skill and experience gains in the UW are almost nil,
so it simply is not worth your time to start a fight in most cases.
The fastest way to travel from anywhere in the Underworld back to the temple
is by killing yourself. Unlike the regular game, anything you are holding
in your hands when you die, will go back with you. Since death is irrelevant
in the UW, you can save much time by drowning yourself or walking into fire.
One IMPORTANT note, this is not the preferred method of travel if you have
any karma points. That will be covered at the end with Set the Forgiver.

    D. Make your way to Khepri (this is not too difficult until the very end
when you encounter the Demon that bars the way). Do whatever it takes
to get by the demon (it is probably the toughest of all the demons
       encountered in the UW.)
    E. Drop the wand on Khepri's square. Khepri will grant you Lungs.
Sekhmet - Liver Quest
Sekhmet will send you to either Ra or Nefertem. Go to the appropriate person,
and have them teach you. They both assign the same quests. (Both quests
are easier if you carry a light wand on the journey, but it is not necessary
if you are not uncomforatble with the dark).
1. Ptah Quest
you will be told "Seek the wisdom of Ptah."
    A. Go to see Ptah. have him teach you.
    B. Ptah will tell you to seek Thoth.

    E. Take the scales to Re.harakhti and drop them. Re will grant you a liver.
Set - The Karma Quests
See other areas for a discussion of how a person gets karma. For now, it
is only important that a person be able to rid themseleves of the karmic
burden. Of course, the preferred way to get rid of karma is to use the Tiger
figurine in the Land of the Living. But if you are in the UW with karma,
That's NOT going to do you a lot of good.
If you are lawful or Neutral (less than 3 Karma Points), you're inital
appearance in the UW is as normal. You will need to CAREFULLY make your
way to the Temple of Set from the Waterfall side of his temple. I say
carefully, because if you die at this point, you will be ressurected in
the cave of the lawful dragon (AKA The Pit), and have to do the Karma Quest
the HARD way.
When you reach Set's temple, do whatever it takes to get past the Demons
that guard the way, go to Set, and say "Set, Teach me". Set will forgive
you 1 karma point, and then teleport you to the Cave of the Lawful
Dragon.
If you only had one Karma Point, then you can step in the fire and return
to Osiris' temple, and skip reading the rest of this description.
What!?!?! You're still reading this. That must mean either you are just
interested in what happens to those that are naughty (or at least not
careful), or you WERE naughty (or at least not careful).
If for any reason you are resurrected in the pit, and still have Karma to
get rid of, you will have to do it the HARD way. First, you must reach the
base of a LONG climb up (in the PIT are a lawful dragon and a lawful Demon,
that don't take kindly to those that are not lawful, and are just a viscious
as thier Evil/chaotic counterparts.) Also, the Pit is mostly Ice, and as
there is no F&I protection, you will be taking constant damage while on the
Ice. So right off the bat you're in trouble.
Next is the Dragon's Flume, an 8000' Climb, broken into 4 sections. Even if
you DO happen to have FF boots, anything above the first part of the climb
will be too far of a drop for them to save you.
After you have climbed up, you are in the Sea of darkness. You will need to
carefuly swim around several obstacles to get to the next area, the Sinner's
maze. At the end of the Sinner's Maze is a climb down to the east entrance of
Set's temple, once again guarded by three demons.
This all may not sound too bad, and it wouldn't be bad except for one very
minor detail. you will have to do this in TOTAL darkness. Without the
attached maps, you will find this part of the quest very difficult and
frustrating.
Remeber, Each time Set forgives you, you are teleported back to the pit (This
is even true if you don't have any Karma. I told you Set doesn't like
interruptions). When you have no more Karma hits, you can step into a fire
hex and get teleported back to the Temple of Osirus.
